Gene Sarazen (born Eugenio Saraceni) will long be remembered as one of golf’s greatest players. Sarazen’s association with golf dates back to his 9th birthday when he was given a hickory shafted club as a present. He turned professional in 1920 and is credited with inventing the sand wedge. Sarazen, also known as “The Squire,” won 38 PGA Tour titles, including seven major championships. In 1932, he won both the Open and US Open. He was a member of six Ryder Cup teams, and is in the PGA Hall of Fame and the World Golf Hall of Fame.
