NIAF’s Anniversary Gala in 11 Days! Register today!
Time’s running out to book your reservations for NIAF’s 37th Annual Anniversary Gala weekend, October 12-13, at The Washington Hilton in the Nation’s Capital.

Come and celebrate your heritage! Support the only national organization whose mission is to preserve Italian American heritage and culture and advocate for Italian Americans. This year’s gala kicks off Friday, October 12, with a full day of these activities and events, all open to the public and, unless otherwise noted, free:

  • Conference on Immigration, in conjunction with the National Italian American Bar Association (NIABA); 10-11:30 a.m.
  • The Victoria J. Mastrobuono Education Luncheon – a panel discussion Science and the Economy – Academic and Corporate World Partnerships in the 21st Century. Cost: $70 per person; noon to 2 p.m.
  • Movie screening of Passione, a film by John Turturro in which the director shares his passion for Naples and its music; 2-4 p.m.
  • Conference on Breast Cancer – “Bridging Research and Clinical Medicine,” presented by Sbarro Health Research Organization (SHRO); 2-4:30 p.m.
  • Wine Tasting: Calabria’s Cuisine and Culture, featuring wines and delicacies from Italy’s Region of Calabria, with sommelier Luigi Diotaiuti, owner and chef of Al Tiramisu restaurant (, award-winning author and food writer Amy Riolo ( and author of "My Calabria" Rosetta Constantino ( This event is proudly sponsored by Mike's Deli (; 4-6 p.m. Admission is $20.

    Rounding out Saturday evening is the Gala Reception and the centerpiece of the weekend, The 37th Anniversary Awards Gala Dinner.

    This year’s Master of Ceremonies will be Major League Baseball great Mike Piazza. And our distinguished list of honorees will make any Italian American proud: Geno Auriemma, Head Coach of the Olympic champion Women’s U.S. Basketball Team and Head Coach of Women’s Basketball at the University of Connecticut; Giovanni Ferrero, CEO of The Ferrero Group; Ralph Izzo, CEO of Public Service Enterprise Group Incorporated (PSEG); Letizia Moratti, President of Friends of San Patrignano; Mark Del Rosso, Executive Vice President and COO of Audi America; and Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, the oldest science academy in the world. Receiving a NIAF Special Recognition in International Media Relations will be Marco Simeon, director of Government and International Relations at RAI.

    Among the notable guests from the worlds of entertainment, business and government will be Olympic Gold-winner Hope Solo, ESPN’s Tony Reali, Italian model Fabio, and actor Tony Lo Bianco.

Italian Heritage and Culture Month Events—Staten Island
The Italian-Cultural Foundation at Casa Belvedere is hosting several events during Italian Heritage and Culture Month. First up is a screening “Mal’Occhio” (The Evil Eye), a documentary by Agata De Santis; on Tuesday, Oct. 2, 6:30–8:30 p.m. On Thursday, Oct. 18, 6:30–8:30 p.m., a round table discussion “Living the Life–The World of the Italian American Artist,” with the artists of the Italian American Visual Artists’ Network. And, on Wednesday, Oct. 24, 6:30–8:30 p.m., a lecture by Prof. Louis R. Leonini, “The Great Contributions of Italian Discoverers to American History.”

The Italian Cultural Foundation at Casa Belvedere is sponsoring an online fundraiser to assist the independent Toronto-based publisher Guernica Editions in publishing “Trinacria: A Tale of Bourbon Sicily.” Written by Anthony Di Renzo, this historical novel chronicles the destruction of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies during the Italian Revolution and has been compared to Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa’s famous novel “The Leopard.” The campaign’s goal is to raise $5,000 by Dec. 13; it currently has surpassed $4,000. Jovanotti U.S. Fall Tour
With his new retrospective album “Italia 1988-2012” recently released, Italy’s biggest rock star Jovanotti is touring the United States this Fall, starting at the Trocadero in Philadelphia on Oct. 2, then at Royale in Boston on Oct. 5 and Terminal 5 in New York City on Oct. 6. “A Taste of Little Italy” in Poughkeepsie
Swing by the 3rd Annual “A Taste of Little Italy,” on Oct. 7, on Mount Carmel Place in the heart of Poughkeepsie, NY. Vendemmia da' Vinci in Wilmington
This fall festival celebrating the centuries-old tradition of the Italian grape harvest will be held on Sunday, Oct. 7, at Tubman Garrett Park in Wilmington, Del., from 2-6 p.m. The festival will feature the best local wine making, gravy making and cuisine from area restaurants. Uffizi Gallery’s “Angel” Exhibit U.S. Tour Continues
If you haven’t seen the “Offering of the Angels: Tapestries and Paintings from the Uffizi Gallery” exhibition, it’s now on display at the Chazen Museum of Art in Madison, Wis., until November 25. This inspirational exhibit of 43 paintings and two tapestries is a rare opportunity to view such Baroque and Renaissance masters as Botticelli, Liberi and Tintoretto without leaving America. The exhibit’s final U.S. stop is scheduled for the Telfair Museum, Jepson Center for the Arts, in Savannah, Ga., from December 7 through March 31, 2013. For more information, visit
