Attenzione: Deadline This Month for Voyage of Discovery
Urgent: The deadline for students submitting applications for NIAF’s 2012 Voyage of Discovery Program is January 20. The Ambassador Peter F. Secchia Voyage of Discovery Program provides an all-expenses paid trip, including round-trip airfare between Italy and America, for Italian American students who will participate in 10 days of programs in Veneto, Italy.

The purpose of the program is to strengthen Italian American identity by bonding young Italian Americans to the country, culture and heritage of Italy, and help them gain an understanding of their heritage and a pride in preserving that heritage for the next generation.

The trip itinerary will take place in late May and early June and will include educational lectures, meetings with government officials, business leaders and visits to government offices, international businesses, museums and other cultural attractions. Eligibility Requirements: Participants must be of Italian heritage and between the ages of 18-23 at the time of travel (Summer 2012). Students must be enrolled in a college or university for the Spring 2012 semester. The application is available online at www.niaf.org/voyageofdiscovery.

Apply Now for NIAF Scholarships and Grants
Applications for more than 80 scholarships NIAF is offering for the 2012-2013 academic year are being accepted through March 2. That's the deadline. Last year, NIAF scholarships to students in the United States averaged more than $3,000.

Scholarship applicants either must be of Italian descent, with at least one ancestor who has emigrated from Italy, or be a student of any ethnic background majoring or minoring in the Italian language, Italian Studies, Italian American studies or a related field. NIAF scholarship recipients are selected based on academic merit. Students must have a minimum GPA of 3.5 to apply. The application is available online at www.niaf.org/scholarships.

To submit a proposal for a 2012-2013 grant that supports NIAF’s mission to promote Italian American heritage and culture, visit www.niaf.org/grants. Grant applications will be available later this month. The grant application deadline is June 30, 2012.

Tribute to “The Legend” Jimmy Roselli
Make plans to attend the memorial musical tribute to the late, great Jimmy Roselli, who passed away last July. The “other” crooner from Hoboken, N.J., Roselli spent his performing career in the long shadow of Frank Sinatra, but was always a longtime favorite among Italian Americans. The tribute concert takes place February 19, at 2 p.m., at the Coral Springs Center for the Arts, in Coral Springs, Fla. Antico at National Gallery of Art
The National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., is presenting until April 8, 2012, a retrospective on the Italian sculptor Pier Jacopo Alari Bonacolsi, a.k.a. Antico (1455-1528). The exhibition, entitled “Antico: the Golden Age of Renaissance Bronzes,” is the first dedicated to the work of this major Renaissance artist to be organized in the United States. Bravo to NIAF Board Member Joe Moglia for his new post as Head Football Coach at Coastal Carolina University. Most recently, he served as Head Coach of the United Football League’s Omaha Nighthawks. From 2001 to 2008, he was CEO of Ameritrade. NIAF honored him in 2005 with its Special Achievement Award in Business at the Foundation’s East Coast Gala.

Congratulations to internationally renowned singer and songwriter Giada Valenti on her Christmas in Italy Concert, on Dec. 11, in Caldwell, N.J. During the concert, the Venice-born Valenti, who sang the Italian National anthem at NIAF’s 36th Anniversary Gala in October, acknowledged the attendance of NIAF Area Coordinator Pete Rosa and other Foundation members in the audience and thanked NIAF for its continued support.
