October's just around the corner so it's time to make reservations for NIAF's 38th Anniversary Gala, October 25-26, in Washington, D.C.

This year's streamlined gala promises to be an exciting weekend filled with fantastic events, networking opportunities and socializing! Comedian and actor Joe Piscopo is serving as NIAF's celebrity ambassador and will be on hand with many other stars and personalities.

Among this year's distinguished honorees are George Randazzo, Founder and Chairman of the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame in Chicago; Diana Bracco, CEO and President of Bracco S.p.A.; and Roberto Colannino, Chairman and CEO of Piaggio & C. S.p.A. NIAF Vice Chairman Louis J. Freeh, former director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Chairman of Pepper Hamilton LLP and Freeh Group Int'l Solutions, will serve as the Gala Chairman.

  • On Friday, October 25: "Come Fly with Me," NIAF's first-ever Casino Night at the lush Atrium of the Ronald Reagan Building on Pennsylvania Avenue!   • Saturday, October 26: NIAF's Networking Breakfast and special Italian American Studies Association Conference; a fascinating presentation by Linda Barrett Osborne and Paolo Battaglia, authors of the new book "Explorers Emigrants Citizens" A Visual History of the Italian American Experience from the Collections of the Library of Congress"; a special screening of "Carnera: The Walking Mountain," the true story of Italy's only heavyweight champion Primo Carnera, with an exclusive meet-and-greet with the film's lead actor Andrea Iaia; a sit-down Wine Tasting and Luncheon with a knowledgeable sommelier leading tasters through traditional and modern Italian wines; and the annual and always lively "Ieri, Oggi, Domani" State of the Community discussion. Saturday culminates with the evening Gala Receptions, the black-tie 38th Anniversary Awards Gala and, afterward, for those of partying heart and soul, the NIAF After Hours Celebration.

NIAF Photo Contest: Show your Italianità!
The National Italian American Foundation is now accepting submissions for our first NIAF Photo Contest. The topic is Italianità – the Italian spirit or essence!

Photo Contest!

Submit your photograph that best captures Italianità! Submissions may be poignant, breathtaking, humorous, provocative, heartbreaking or gritty. They may be portraits, travel photos, spontaneous moments, family celebrations, ancestors, culinary images, or scenes. Technical quality, composition and clarity are important, but judges will be looking for images that best express Italianness!

You may submit only an image that you have taken yourself or that belongs to you personally. One photo per person, please.

First Prize: One First Prize will be awarded, consisting of:
  • Two tickets (winner and guest) to NIAF's 38th Anniversary Gala dinner and all Gala events the weekend of October 25-26 in Washington, D.C.
  • Two-night stay for two at the Washington Hilton during the Gala weekend.
  • Roundtrip airfare for two (within continental United States).
  • The winning image will be displayed at NIAF's 2013 Anniversary Gala, on the NIAF website, and in NIAF's social media.
  • The winning photo will be featured in the 2013 Winter issue of NIAF's Ambassador magazine, published in December.
  • The winner will receive a one-year associate membership to NIAF (transferable).
Second Prize: Six Second Prize winners will each receive a one-year associate membership to NIAF (transferable). Second prize images will be displayed at NIAF's 2013 Anniversary Gala, on the NIAF website, in NIAF's social media, and in the 2013 Winter issue of NIAF's Ambassador magazine, published in December.

Celebrate The Year of Italian Culture 2013!

"The Year of Italian Culture" is a year-long initiative by the Italian government to promote Italy's innovative contributions to the world in science, technology and culture with an extensive program of events around the United States, including art exhibits, theatrical performances, concerts and conferences focusing on literature, architecture, the sciences, design, fashion and food. Tee Time
It finally here! NIAF's 9th Annual New York Golf Tournament benefitting the Foundation's scholarship and educational programs for the New York area gets started at 10:30 a.m., on August 13, at the Old Westbury Golf & Country Club in Old Westbury, N.Y. Immigration Public Policy Luncheon
The NIAF Frank J. Roberto Bolle & Friends

Casa Belvedere
The Italian Cultural Foundation at Casa Belvedere on Staten Island continues its busy summer schedule this month with a Tuscan Farm-to-Table Dinner with Chef Dave on August 17, and Dining al Fresco with Michael Colameco on August 21. And catch some of the most-awarded Italian films at Casa Belvedere's 8 p.m. outdoor screenings starting with "The First Beautiful Thing" on August 1 and "Love, Soccer and Other Catastrophes" on August 8. The movies are in Italian with English subtitles. Admission is free; donations welcome. Bring A Chair...Baltimore's Annual Little Italy Film Festival
This open-air, summertime, Friday nights, film festival is a fun throwback to the good old days and takes place right out in the parking lot at the corner Stiles and High streets in Baltimore's Little Italy. So bring your lawn chair early to get a good seat. The Colombo Bank is providing complimentary popcorn, as it has for 16 years, and four of Little Italy's fine Italian restaurants will be selling salads, subs and cannoli. Vendemmia da Vinci
The da Vinci Society of Delaware is holding its annual fall festival Vendemmia da Vinci celebrating the centuries-old tradition of the Italian grape harvest on Sunday, October 13, at Tubman Garrett Park in Wilmington, Del., from 2 - 6 p.m. The festival will feature some of the best local Italian wines, Italian cuisine from area restaurants, an Italian beer garden, live entertainment, a homemade gravy-making contest, and Italian vendors. Arthur Cola at Italian American Museum

Ancient Art of Sicily — Southern Cal
Last chance to see the masterpieces of ancient art at the antiquities exhibition, "Sicily: Art and Invention between Greece and Rome," at the J. Paul Getty Villa in Malibu, Calif. The exhibition of about 150 ancient artworks runs through August 19, then travels to the Cleveland Museum of Art where it will be on view September 29 through January 5, 2014. Da Vinci: The Genius
If you're in Santa Ana, Calif., this summer, swing by the "Da Vinci: The Genius" exhibition at the Discovery Science Center. The exhibit demonstrates the full scope of Leonardo Da Vinci's remarkable genius as an inventor, artist, anatomist, sculptor, engineer, musician and architect. It features full-scale inventions crafted from Da Vinci's personal codices, plus reproductions of his most famous Renaissance art and anatomical sketches. Through September 8. Congratulations to Angela Rago, wife of NIAF Council member Vito Rago, on her recently released movie "Sister Italy," which she wrote and starred in. Directed by Angelo Bonsignore, the film, now available on dvd, is a drama/comedy about two sisters trying to get an inheritance from a rich aunt by cooking all her favorite foods for her.
